New website launched to help citizens of Commonwealth countries vote

Many people with leave or enter to remain who are citizens of commonwealth countries may not realise it yet, but they have the right to vote in the UK's upcoming General Election on 12th December 2019.

Citizens UK today launches a simple and shareable new website, canivote.org.uk to help everyone resident in the UK check if they are eligible to vote or not.

The site also explains how people of different nations, including European nations and countries like Hong Kong, can participate in different elections, or get involved more widely in democracy.

We launched the site as part of Citizens UK's voter registration efforts. The Electoral Commission found last year that over 9m people were not on the electoral roll. People wanting to participate in the UK General Election now have just days to get registered to vote - as the deadline is 26th November.

The data shows that along with people under 21 and private renters, people of commonwealth countries are the groups most likely to not be registered to vote.

Citizens UK is about giving everyone a chance to contribute and participate fully in society. We think everyone who lives and works here, sends their kid to school here or contributes to our society should participate in public life.
