Community Voices Heard at Citizens Somerset Listening Event

Community Voices Heard at Citizens Somerset Listening Event

Last Thursday, voices from across Taunton and Wellington came together in a powerful show of community spirit at the Citizens Somerset Listening Event, held at The Castle School. People of all ages and backgrounds—from school students to faith leaders—gathered to share their experiences, concerns, and hopes for the future of Somerset.

The event brought together schools and colleges with faith and community organisations in a unique opportunity to listen to one another. Over the past few weeks, students from The Castle School, Richard Huish College, Wellington School, Lyngford Park Primary School, and St James Church School had been conducting listening exercises, reflecting on what brings them joy and what changes could help them flourish. At the event, they presented their findings, sparking wider discussions among attendees.

Somerset Listening Event

Representatives from the Taunton Methodist Churches, Taunton Mosque, West Somerset Quakers, as well as teachers, parents, and community leaders, engaged in one-to-one conversations and roundtable discussions. Topics ranged from community safety and transport, to youth opportunities, reflecting the diverse concerns of local residents.

A highlight of the evening was the participation of students in the Citizens Somerset Youth Leadership Academy, who showcased their listening work and spoke passionately about the issues that matter to them. Their voices, alongside those of community members from all walks of life, formed the foundation of a broader conversation about making real change in Somerset.

This event was a brilliant example of what happens when we come together across our differences. It’s about ensuring every voice is heard and that we can work together towards solutions that benefit everyone. Rob Stevens, Co-chair of Citizens Somerset

The listening event marks the beginning of a new phase for Citizens Somerset, as they build towards a relaunch in the autumn. By gathering community concerns and ideas, the organisation aims to develop a shared agenda for change—one led by the people who live and work in the region.

The event’s success was evident in the lively discussions, the intergenerational participation, and the genuine commitment to taking action. With refreshments in hand and conversations flowing, attendees left inspired, ready to continue listening and working together for a better Somerset.
