Mayoral Assembly Asks Sadiq Khan to Help Us Be 'Londoners for Life'

Community leaders ask Sadiq Khan to help them be 'Londoners for life' at the London Mayoral Assembly

In front of over 2,000 London Citizens leaders in Methodist Central Hall, the Mayoral Assembly on Thursday 25th April featured creative performances, powerful testimonies, and exciting commitments on the issues that matter most to us.

This was the culmination of months spent identifying the key issues through listening to thousands of Londoners, and then preparing asks on work and wages, migration and citizenship, and safe and healthy homes.

London Citizens is a non-partisan organisation that seeks to work with anyone with the power to make change on our priorities. For this reason, we invited the top two candidates for the office of mayor to attend the assembly.

On the night, we put our asks to Sadiq Khan. He committed to:

  • Back our national campaign for a living wage for social care workers. This could lead to 188,000 social care workers in London being guaranteed at least the real Living Wage.
  • Double the number of businesses accrediting as Living Hours employers year on year, protecting all Londoners from precarious work.
  • Support our national campaign to improve pathways to citizenship
  • Co-run a London-wide day celebrating and promoting ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
  • Secure our Community Land Trust (CLT) sites with London CLT in Shadwell, Greenwich and Ealing
  • Work together across London to retrofit and repair Londoners’ homes

Unapologetically Faithful in Public Life

Four community leaders of different faiths speaking at a London Citizens event

On the very same evening, just before the assembly began, over 100 leaders from faith communities across London gathered at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church in a powerful demonstration of unity and a shared commitment to social change. Leaders sang, built relationships and shared stories of how their faith tradition remains the bedrock of their motivation to make change on the issues that matter to Londoners.

Communities across London have spent the last year listening to each other on issues that matter. Through 6000 conversations, we've created a manifesto of changes we're asking the Mayor of London to work with us on: from work and wages, migration and refugee welcome to housing and climate justice.

We’re bringing together everyday people and local organisations to build a better, fairer London.

We’re working together to make change on the issues that matter to our communities, from campaigning for zebra crossings on dangerous roads, to reforming the immigration system, to the Living Wage campaign.
