West Yorkshire Citizens
Who are we?
We are West Yorkshire Citizens, a Citizens UK chapter.
We are a diverse chapter of over 35 organisations, including school trusts, community groups, and faith institutions, working together to create meaningful change across the region.
In Leeds, we’ve secured a real Living Wage for all directly employed Council staff (an investment of £13.2 million) campaigned for mental health navigators in GP surgeries, and driven improvements in local parks and footpaths through green campaigns.
In Bradford, our alliance of six school trusts: Dixons Academies Trust, Beckfoot Trust, Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust, Exceed Academies Trust, Priestley Academy Trust and Co-op Academies Trust, and Born in Bradford, grew from the successful Schools Pandemic Recovery Summit held in March 2021 to allow young people to share their pandemic experiences and discuss how they wanted to rebuild Bradford post-pandemic.
Our representation is strong across the alliances and we work together to drive change on the issues our local communities care about most.
Since our founding, West Yorkshire Citizens has:
- Successfully campaigned and won a real Living Wage for staff at Leeds City Council and other employers, and campaigned for a real Living Wage for care workers.
- Influenced the introduction of mental health liaison practitioners in GP surgeries across Leeds.
- Improved dementia care for racialised communities.
- Won improved road safety measures in our local community.
- Secured over £500,000 worth of housing estate repairs on the Beckhills Estate and campaigned to win improved rubbish collections in the Beckhills estate.
- Improvements of £50,000 to Brickfield Park including play equipment.
- Launched the successful Pandemic Recovery Summit, refining big picture problems that young people care about into specific asks for decision makers
- Seen commitment to change from decision makers, including from the mayor of West Yorkshire who committed to have young people involved in her policy making committee
- Presented to 300 local and national policymakers, resulting in an ask to the leader of the council’s office to input directly into decisions affecting them
- Secured a commitment from Bradford Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board to work with us to fill the gaps in Mental Health provision in schools across the District.
- And much more!
What are our priority campaigns?
The priority issues we are working on are:
- Improving Bus transport across the cities
- Building six neighbourhood teams in the cities to campaign for change at a local level
- Student Union campaigning
- Developing an organising approach to community policing training
- Schools action on safety, mental health, racism and the cost of living
- Developing community organising amongst communities experiencing injustice – Roma communities, sex workers and young people in local neighbourhoods
- Connecting with Citizens UK's leaders across the North of England for a stronger voice and to build power
